How to survive a breakdown on the Motorway

I think we can all agree that motorways are the most dangerous places for your vehicle to break down. There are a few steps you should consider so you can remain safe before you contact us and whilst we're on our way to rescue you.

How to survive a breakdown on a motorway

Bear in mind that the hard shoulder is only for emergency situations, not for making telephone calls, having a stretch or lavatory breaks. When it's an emergency situation and you are unable to leave the motorway, pull onto the hard shoulder.

Ensure you stop as far to the left as you can do, if possible make sure the wheels are turned to the left. Leave your hazard lights flashing. In the case that it's dark, misty, raining or foggy place your sidelights on as well.

You and your passengers need to leave the vehicle, as soon as possible, using the doors on the left-hand side and also move up the bank or stand at the rear of the safety barricade. Please leave pets inside the car; some people have died trying to stop their pets from running onto the motorway and they will be much safer inside the car.

Don a reflective jacket in the case that you possess one, however, don't leave a hazard triangle placed on the hard shoulder. Do not try even a basic repair. Call our business on 01793 626003 and we will get to you as soon as it is humanly possible.

If you do not possess a mobile phone, go to an emergency telephone on your side of the carriageway; abide by the markings on top of the posts at the back of the hard shoulder; the telephone is free and connects directly to the police.

If you feel at risk from by an individual, return to your automobile by a left-hand door and lock all doors; leave your car again as soon as you really feel this particular threat has definitely elapsed.

In case you have a disability that hinders you from adhering to the aforementioned advice, try to keep your seatbelt on, switch on your hazard warning lights and use a mobile phone, when you possess one, to contact our company or else the emergency services.

If you aren't able to get to the hard shoulder, remain in your automobile until you can be completely sure it is safe to leave it. Place your hazard lights on, always keep your seat belt fastened and phone the emergency service

A little introduction to my blog

Swindon Auto Recovery is a local vehicle recovery service based in Highworth, Wiltshire. Our company was started 3 years ago, and what a journey it has been! We offer various services to the good people of Wiltshire including car recovery, van recovery, classic car transportation, auction vehicle transportation and scrap car recovery.

Over the last 3 years I have encountered many colourful, but friendly, characters that have made my life much richer for meeting them. I feel that I have one of the best vocations in the world and helping stranded drivers gives me a real sense of job satisfaction.

I have even helped a stranded driver who had their pet dog, “butch” with them, he was a wonderful, energetic, fine specimen of a dog. A Staffordshire pit bull who behaved impeccably whilst in my recovery transporter.

Yep, there is no person or creature that this recovery service will ever turn away. I have decided to keep a journal of all the people I help from now on, maybe tell some of their stories (if that’s okay with them). I would also like to share advice and tips on the best ways to prevent people from using my company in the first place. I believe by doing this, creates good karma for myself and if the day does arrive when you need my services, you will know that I have your best interests at heart.

When I started out in this line of business I had one, rather small and beaten up, pick-up truck, and in a short space of time I have built up my business to three trailers and 4 employees. I know it’s pretty small right? I think the RAC and AA will feel pretty safe that I’m not going to run them outta town just yet.

Give me a few more years and I will run the best recovery service that my hometown has ever seen, and that’s a promise.
